Judge Roger E. Henderson was born in Wadesboro, North Carolina, in 1949. His parents are James F. Henderson, Sr. (deceased), a former United States Postal Service employee, and Selma R. Henderson, a former high school history teacher.
Judge Henderson attended Chesterfield County public schools. He graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1967, where he served as Student Body President. In 1971, Henderson received his bachelor’s degree in Government from Wofford College. While at Wofford, Henderson was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Army Reserves, in which he served from 1971 to 1977. He was employed with Burlington Industries in Reidsville, North Carolina, until 1974. From August 1975 to December 1977, Henderson attended the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he received his juris doctorate degree.
Henderson and his wife, the former Sarah Jane Leppard, returned to their hometown of Chesterfield in 1978, where Henderson joined Edward M. Leppard, Sr., his father-in-law, in the practice of law. After his father-in-law’s death in 1985, Henderson formed the firm of Henderson and Spencer and continued in the general practice of law until 1995, when he was elected by the South Carolina General Assembly to the position of Family Court Judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit to fill the unexpired term of Jamie F. Lee. Judge Henderson served as a Family Court Judge until March 1, 2015. He was elected to the position of Resident Circuit Judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit on February 4, 2015, to fill the seat vacated by J. Michael Baxley.
While practicing law, Henderson served on the Commission for Higher Education from 1986 to 1993. He also served as chairman of the Chesterfield County Election Commission from 1979 to 1984. Henderson served on the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline from 1986 to 1990 and was the assistant Recorder for the Town of Chesterfield from 1979 to 1980 and Recorder for the Town of Chesterfield from 1981 to 1982.
Judge Henderson has been a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, Chesterfield County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He has also been a member of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers’ Association. He is admitted to practice in all South Carolina courts and the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. Judge Henderson served on the Family Court Judges’ Advisory Committee and was President of the South Carolina Conference of Family Court Judges. He was also awarded the Family Court’s Buchan, Brown and Jacobs Award in 2014.
In his community, Judge Henderson has been a member of the Jaycees, Lion’s Club, Chesterfield Civitan Club, Chesterfield Service Club and has served on the executive committee for Boy Scout Troop 650. He is an Eagle Scout, coached Dixie Youth baseball for many years and is an avid baseball fan.
Henderson is a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church, where he has served as Deacon and Trustee, and has been a Sunday School teacher for over 25 years. Henderson and his wife, Sarah Jane, have three children: Emory C., Charlotte Rae and Roger Edward, Jr. They also have three grandchildren.
