Judge Michelle M. Hurley

Judge Michelle M. Hurley was born in Columbia, South Carolina. She is the daughter of Anthony Manigault Hurley, a funeral director, and Alice Wyche Hurley, a retired master social worker. Michelle is a graduate of Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Howard University, Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, and the University of South Carolina School of Law.

After law school, Michelle served as a law clerk to the Honorable Alison Renee Lee, Circuit Court Judge. Her legal career also includes employment as an attorney for Richland County Department of Social Services; attorney and legal trainer for the Children’s Law Center of the University of South Carolina School of Law; assistant director of the DSS Office of Individual & Provider Rights and Administrative Hearings; and associate municipal court judge for the City of Columbia.

Prior to her law career, Michelle served as a funeral director and embalmer for her father’s funeral business.

Michelle has been a member of the South Carolina Bar Association; the Columbia Lawyers Association; the South Carolina Summary Court Judges Association; the Children’s Law Committee; the Judicial Qualifications Committee; the Children’s Justice Act Task Force; the board of Thomas Cooper Society; and the Department of Consumer Affairs Preneed Advisory Board. Judge Hurley has also served as a mentor for first year law students, and as the advisor for the Children’s Advocacy Law Society.

Judge Hurley is a member of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.; the Moles, Inc.; and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is married to George C. Johnson, partner at Johnson, Toal & Battiste, P.A.
